The footwear Roger Bannister wore in running the first sub-four-minute-mile fetched $409,344 at a recent auction. After bidding, the auctioneer held up the shoes and said “Soled.”

  1. I saw a video of Bannister's run and at the end, he looked like he had nothing left. He collapsed into someone arms, after just barley beating the 4:00 minute mark. Watch a race today with runners finishing at 3;43. The look like they want to run another lap."What kept you, Roger?"

  2. True. Times have changed. Training too.

  3. Also....Bannister was in med school at the time, so his time for training was likely affected by the time he had to devote to studies.

  4. True, but there were a lot of people trying and some saying it couldn't be done. But you are correct, training and dedication are a must. Image if Bannister had no other obligations other than running. There had to be an innate talent for him to do that. My point was how far we have come with sports abilities. Running a race gives you an exact measurement of a person's abilities. That must hold true in other events that can't be measured so precisely.
