The Blue Bombers finish third and have to play the 12-6 Roughriders, while fourth-place BC gets to play the 8-10 Ti-Cats. You'll find the CFL playoffs in the dictionary under negative reinforcement.

  1. And 9-9 Edmonton, who finished fifth in the CFL West and out of the playoffs, also have a better record than the Hamilton Ti-Cats, who get a home playoff game.

  2. I don't understand. Is that they way they handle seedings in Canada?

  3. If the 4th place team in one division has a better record than the 3rd place team in the other division, then the 4th place team crosses over to replace the 3rd-place team.

So this year, 3rd-place in the CFL East Montreal (5-13) got replaced by 9-9 BC (4th in the West) who cross over to play the 2nd-place team in the East, 8-10 Hamilton... Unusual this year that even the 5th-place West team (9-9 Edmonton) had a better record than the 2nd-place East team.

It is fairer than it used to be. Designed to prevent what happened in 1981, when 5-11 Ottawa (3rd in the East) made it to the Grey Cup game, while Western team with winning records didn't even make the playoffs. Similar problems exist in the NBA between East and West conference.

    1. True. In tough next week against Calgary, who have owned the CFL West — and esp. the Bombers — in the last decade.
