SPORTS DEKE REPRISE
What’s the big deal about Wayne Gretzky babysitting Robin Thicke when Gretz was traded to the Kings? By then Dave Semenko had spent years babysitting Gretzky.
One of the toughest of the enforcers, Dave Semenko opened up the ice for Gretzky, Messier and the all Oilers’ skilled forwards. He helped Edmonton win its first two Stanley Cups in 1984 and ’85.
Despite his fearsome reputation, his Oiler teammates say off the ice he was a witty, kind and gentle man who kept them all grounded. From his diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, it took the disease only three weeks to haul the big man down.
