I learned recently that Stanford's group name is Cardinal (singular), alluding to the Cardinal-red colour, not Cardinals, the bird other schools are named after. Their unofficial mascot is a tree.
Interesting tid-bit: in the early 70s, Stanford decided to change their mascot from Indians. The student body voted for "Robbed Barrons". The university president said that would be an insult to the school's founder and his descendants, and he selected Cardinal.
